Pops and circumstance

By BEN MEIKLEJOHN  |  June 27, 2007

The Portland Symphony Orchestra takes its Independence Pops concert around the state, performing outdoors in Cape Elizabeth, Bridgton, Old Orchard Beach, Sanford, and Brunswick. Nautical themes comprise the program titled “From Sea to Shining Sea,” including Sousa marches, Arthur Sullivan’s “HMS Pinafore Overture,” Klaus Badelt’s soundtrack “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Bob Lowden’s “Armed Forces Salute,” and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Lawrence Golan guest conducts, with complimentary fireworks.

As circumstance would have it, there is lots of bass drum and cymbal smashing and crashing this week, welcoming the Fourth of July. As summer marches in, celebrate your country and state, in a manner befitting the spirit of our nation — with good old-fashioned music (and lots of oom-pa-pa).
