Superpower was the kind of band that when told they had eight minutes left to play, ripped through eight more songs without stopping. That’s dedication, passion, and most of all, artistic integrity. The whole show was brimming with it. Milo’s Syndicate is one of the hardest working newer bands to come out of Boston. Five “anywhere-anytime” kind of guys. Big guys who could kick your ass but would still prefer an all-ages show. Whereas the headliner had the occasional chaotic screech, Milo’s had a constant, satisfying rumble, like a well-oiled muscle car, never slipping up despite all the beer pooling on stage. Their sound is thick East Coast hardcore, calling to mind the best of Blood for Blood and Sick of it All (who they properly covered) without seeming like a knock-off of anything. Same goes for Downhill Fast, an even newer band with a noticeable affinity for first-wave ’80s hardcore. Singer Jimmy Flynn sported his “BHC” T-shirt with pride, and there were more than a few Suicidal Tendencies-inspired thrash interludes to counter the heavier breakdowns. In this sort of amplified world, things may get old, speakers may get blown out, the unconverted may still get easily confused, but it’s more a celebration of what continues to bond, despite what all that dissonance may suggest.
