The UK label Type Records specializes in avant-garde music with a soft, lyrical touch. Founded by musician John Xela (a/k/a Xela) and graphic designer Stefan Lewandowsky (a/k/a Aeioux), Type releases atmospheric experimental music with roots in rock, modern classical, jazz, and free improv. In a section on its Web site called Type Radio, the label posts extended MP3 mixes by Type artists. Here's a selection of some of the finest recent additions available at www.typerecords.com.

Aeioux, “In the Back of the Real”
This is the sixth in an ongoing series of æthereal mixes by label head Lewandowsky. The title refers to an Allen Ginsberg spoken-word sample that pops up midway through the mix, and there are plenty of odd vocal snippets from Smithsonian Folkways recordings scattered throughout. A cinematic DJ mix, “In the Back of the Real” features lush, grainy music by Tim Hecker and Stars of the Lid, as well as some lovely forthcoming tracks from Type artists Machinefabriek, Peter Broderick, and Boston’s own Helios.

For Barry Ray, “A Little Tweaking”
For Barry Ray is the husband-and-wife duo of John Chantler and Carina Thoren. On “A Little Tweaking,” the two create an esoteric mix based on their far-reaching musical interests and influences, which run the gamut from free jazz and classic drones to acoustic folk and psych.

Keith Kenniff, “Jazz, or something like it”
Boston musician Keith Kenniff (a/k/a Helios and a/k/a Goldmund) delivers the second in a pair of “influences” mixes for Type. On his first, he shared some of his classical favorites, which tended toward the contemplative and pastoral, with selections by Morton Feldman, George Crumb, and Gabriel Fauré. Here Kenniff focuses on contemporary jazz and jazz-inspired material, and it is a similarly mellow, if sometimes over-tasteful, affair featuring music by the Claudia Quintet, Ben Monder, and the Adam Rogers Quintet.

Xela, “Type Radioshow Episode 004”
On this extended radio-style program, Type founder John Xela throws a dash of grit into the works, serving up bracing noise from Wolf Eyes, Keiji Haino, and Boston analog synth virtuoso Can’t (a/k/a Jessica Rylan). But all is not harshness and gloom — Xela also plays some wonderful early Greek experimental electronic music, some eccentric new songs from Finland, and the evocative folk of Providence singer-songwriter Larkin Grimm.
