Three has also hit the road with prog-merchant success stories Coheed and Cambria, with whom they share an extensive genealogy. The bands both hail from the same Woodstock scene, and Eppard’s brother Josh played drums in Coheed until earlier this year. The two groups also share a penchant for high-register singing and sweeping, epic melodies ― when asked about this similarity, Eppard immediately pegs it as the legacy of their Woodstock prog-rock forbearers, the little-known local band Peacebomb, who counted the Eppard brothers and Coheed mastermind Claudio Sanchez among their teenage acolytes in the early nineties. After the dissolution of Peacebomb, Eppard snatched up its drummer and percussionist, who pounded in fine form behind him Wednesday night.
Staying true to their unswervingly swerving style, Three closed the show with a driving Latin jam, showcasing the skills of the aforementioned skinsmen, along with Eppard’s unique flamenco-inspired strumming patterns. Tribal toms and timbales thundered to crescendo, and the band members staggered off the stage, accepting the hugs and handshakes of fans who seemed undaunted by sweatiness as they crowded around the merch table. The mystery matron, meanwhile, had boogied off into the night. Another Three show, another unlikely listener rocked.
