Lastly, composer Fennelly will talk on August 25 about his piece — also premiering in Maine — Skyscapes III for “pierrot” ensemble (2002). It has three movements — “Clouds over Cape Canaille,” “Las Calanques — the fjords near Marseilles,” and “the powerful wind of Provence” — and is scored for alto flute, bass clarinet, cello, clarinet, flute, piano, piccolo, and violin. It was first performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players in New York City in 2003, and is this year’s winner of PCMF’s Composers Competition. The final festival concert will include works by Wolfgang Mozart and Johannes Brahms.
PCMF is doing its part to perform newer contemporary compositions, bring living composers to our community, and inspire children about music-making. They’re bringing their act downtown for larger audiences to more easily attend performances. Now, Portland, it’s time for you to do your part, by checking out these concerts. With five dates to choose from, there’s no excuse for missing out.
