Pearson’s laptop has folders for each genre and folders that organize tracks by BMPs. This gives him the freedom to spin anything from a blissful down-tempo groove to a reggaetón mash-up on command.
But he hasn’t just fed the growth of the Basstown sound — he’s planted the seeds of a real legacy. And he’s not without his own set of emulators. DJ E-MARCÉ, a young Basstown impresario, has set up his own music page where you can download four of his remixes, all of which are based on the thugrave template. “Sippin’ on Some B-More” puts a now ubiquitous Three 6 Mafia refrain over some garish electro beats. “Itty Bitty Titty Committee featuring E-Marcé” is even gaudier, with verses like “How do you expect my shit to pop/When you look like a kid in Kindergarten Cop?” The most tasteful of the bunch is his slightly touched remix of “The Rejection” by Dangerous Muse; it’s rubbed just enough to make the classic track pop for the new age. E-Marcé does his thing for free tonight, August 23, downstairs at the Middle East, alongside Spank Rock’s CHRIS DEVLIN.
