Portland scene report: August 31, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  August 29, 2007

USM’s Center for Continuing Education is hosting MARK LOURIE, VP of development for SKYLINE MUSIC, a national booking agency based locally, who’ll be teaching “Gigging 101.” Over four weeks starting October 3, you can learn how to find and prepare for gigs, market yourself, get out of town, and deal with prickly industry professionals. Get more info here: www.usm.maine.edu/cce/.

How disappointing is it that WILCO tunes are in all of those VW commercials on NESN during the Sox games? “Sibilance” staffers are threatening to melt their limited-edition, She Came Along to ME EPs they don’t actually play for fear of scratching.

RAKISH PADDY, after finishing up 10 years of Friday and Saturday nights at Brian Boru, have finished up for good. SEAN SHEERINS, who started the original BAILEY’S MISTAKE in 1987 and has been playing Celtic music on two continents for a generation now, says he just can’t do the third set anymore. You can still catch Sheerins at BLUE and SLAINTE doing solo shows of lesser length, and his Galway fans can still expect him to return to “where the money is good and the gigs short.”

LINOLEUM BLOWNAPARTE, known for bluesy instrumentals, have announced their first album, Twelve Flavors of Temptation, will drop September 15 at Bubba’s with a show that opens with the HI-TIDES. Cover will be $6, but you’ll get a free copy of the disc, so that seems like a downright steal. What do you call it when a bomb goes off in a kitchen in France?

Did you miss that KATE SCHROCK has a new disc out? We kind of did. Sorry about that. It’s called Invocation, it’s the first disc from Schrock since 2003’s very good Indiana, and half of it was recorded in Jamaica. More than that we’ll save for a later date.
