Portland scene report: September 9, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  September 5, 2007

ISAAC SHAINBLUM, who hosts THE LOCALS on WMPG, can finally avoid late nights. He’s moved the show to Sunday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to noon. So civilized. Local music on a Sunday morn. Listen in this Sunday and you might catch Shainblum’s new find, JESSE RAY CARTER, of Virginia, who plies Delta blues. Shainblum captured him live at Mount Apatite Farm in Auburn, back in August.

EMILIA DAHLIN took home yet another songwriting contest, this time winning the local semi-finals of the STARBUCKS MUSIC MAKERS competition last Tuesday, beating out locals like JASON SPOONER and JONATHAN CALL, along with a few out-of-town types. In addition to a bunch of coffee and a mug, Starbucks threw in a couple Benjamins. Not too shabby.

If you’re quick you can catch the CD-release show tonight at SPACE with SCOTT PETERSON. His Rhythm in the Pines is a solo project, but he got lots of help from guest musicians on cello, fiddle, upright bass, guitars, and wind and brass instruments. Recorded on Wolfe's Neck over the winter, the disc features a silk-screened cover, hand-printed by Peterson himself. MOSES ATWOOD opens the show.
