Music seen, CD release at SPACE, August 24

When I think Miss Fairchild, I think over-the-top graphics, attire, lingo, and sound. Stopping short of being too gimmicky, they have been able to pull off their style with success thanks to good musicianship and detailed attention to their live performance.
It must have been the “August Syndrome” that Ian Paige refers to that kept the Miss Fairchild CD-release party from being filled to capacity. Rather, the standard family, friends, openers, friends of openers, handful of local musicians and dedicated female fans rounded out SPACE’s large dance floor.
There was a welcome change with this show: it wasn’t so much that Miss Fairchild’s energy was any lower, but that the band members had a more calm and collected attitude, which seemed to work really well with the new material from Oh La La Sha Sha.
They have their work cut out for them as they attempt to replicate the full band sound and harmony-layered vocals on the new album. But the maturity that comes with a sophomore album was evident in showmanship, material, and their confident approach that resonated from start to finish. The live instruments mixed with pre-recorded production are an added bonus, especially watching P-Nice mixing it up between saxophone and turntables. Sure, it’s hard to take a song whose chorus includes the line “Girls gone wild” too seriously, but if it’s done well it’s easy to look past the clichés.

SPACE Gallery will be awfully loud Thursday, with the CD release of Sun Gods in Exile's Black Light, White Lines, supported by Ogre and the debut of Murcielago. Last Friday's L'Animaux Tryst showcase and this show are sonic polar opposites on the SPACE spectrum, but good for them for giving some boot-stomping guitar-rock a chance.
