Bounty

By TED DROZDOWSKI  |  September 12, 2007

Johnny D’s runs a trifecta with CORINNE WEST & POSSE playing bluegrass on the 23rd, the GYPSY CIMBALOM BAND on the 24th, and local folk-rocker SARAH BORGES on the 26th. On that last night, JOE BONAMASSA plays blues-rock guitar heroics at Berklee, and JAMES MONTGOMERY brings more blues rock to Scullers Jazz Club (DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston; 617.562.4111) on the 24th. Midwestern folk master GREG BROWN is at the Somerville Theatre October 27, and the MAYBELLES (as in Maybelle Carter) play old-time country at Club Passim. Also at Passim, on the 29th, it’s Nashville songwriter MARY GAUTHIER. The month’s highlights finish with durable folkie GEOFF MULDAUR at Johnny D’s and Americana duo OVER THE RHINE at Scullers, both on the 30th and ROSIE THOMAS at Passim on Halloween.

November
Fall’s final full month kicks off with rockabilly legend the real WANDA JACKSON at Johnny D’s on the 1st. “STEPPIN’ OUT,” the annual elegant extravaganza fundraiser for the Dimmock Community Health Center, celebrates its 20th anniversary on November 3 at the Westin Waterfront Hotel (425 Summer St, Boston; 866.468.7619 or www.ticketweb.com). The line-up is like a directory of jazz and R&B history, with GEORGE BENSON, DELLA REESE, the PERSUASIONS, the TEMPTATIONS, BOBBYBLUE” BLAND, JERRY BUTLER, RAMSEY LEWIS, ROBERTA FLACK, and many more.

Venezuelan-pop fans: November 8 is your lucky day. LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES are at the Regattabar. On the dusty US roots route, ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL bring Texas swing to the Arlington Regent on the 14th.

Indian percussion giant ZAKIR HUSSAIN and santoor virtuoso RAHUL SHARMA team up at Sanders Theatre on November 16. The next night, New England folk boss ELLIS PAUL makes an overdue return to the Somerville Theatre, where Senegalese vocal legend YOUSSOU N’DOUR appears on the 24th.

Tickets for shows at the Orpheum Theatre, the Roxy, the Middle East, the Berklee Performance Center, and the Somerville Theatre are available via www.ticketmaster.com or 617.931.2000

  •   RICKIE LEE JONES | BALM IN GILEAD  |  December 02, 2009
It’s astonishing to think that Rickie Lee Jones would turn out an album this organic and free of cynicism 30 years after her debut with the star-making, retro-hipster hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” Particularly since her songwriting has always been so acutely self-aware.
  •   MYSTIC MUSO  |  November 04, 2009
“America’s Pre-eminent Music Writer Dead at 52” was the headline on Robert Palmer’s obituary in Rolling Stone after his liver failed in 1997.

    Self-released (2009)
  •   DARRELL NULISCH | JUST FOR YOU  |  October 22, 2009
This Boston-based blues and soul singer’s seventh album might seem an update of the elegantly funky Stax sound, with its deep grooves and smartly harmonized horns.
  •   REVIEW: TOM RUSSELL | BLOOD AND CANDLE SMOKE  |  September 22, 2009
This LA-born troubadour with a Dustbowl voice works voodoo on his 24th studio album, conjuring ghosts of the ’60s and ’70s along with apocalyptic visions as he relates tales of gun-toting madmen and dark rifts of the heart.
