SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO, ATTACK DECAY SUSTAIN RELEASE

After spinning and remixing everyone else’s tracks, James Ford and Jas Shaw, a/k/a Simian Mobile Disco, are finally debuting their own. Short on irony, testosterone, and patience,
Attack Decay Sustain Release
hurtles from genre to genre, in three-minute bursts of exuberant pastiche. Ford and Shaw have studied the post-1980 dance diaspora from electro to house to rap, and the result is melting-pot pop: the keyboard shimmer of Orbital (“Wooden” and “Scott”), the droopy Depeche-isms (“I Believe” and “Love”), Daft Punk’s robo-croon (“I Got This Down”), and a stark, sweaty, 21st-century “Pump Up the Jam” calling itself “It’s the Beat.” It’s all playful fun, almost too much so. Nevertheless, after Char Johnson lays down her chorus on “Hustler,” an ode to record-store kleptos set to the sinister skitter of retro synths, you’ll be mouthing the sassy nonsense yourself. You won’t care that it’s gleefully empty, shamelessly primitive, pre-rational, lo-fi. You’ll be too busy dancing.

Nu Rave extravaganza
So the New York Times told me the other day that British kids are learning to dance and love again, and I couldn’t be happier.

Every last one of you who votes in our Best Music Poll is a treasure; but blessed are those who write-in.
Tiga | Ciao!
This Montreal-based electro-house dude made his name with slyly straight-faced covers of Nelly's "Hot in Herre" and Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night," and on his second studio disc, he doesn't appear hugely concerned that his original material should sound all that original.
New rave
The newest act to come buzzing from the UK is a trio of educated lads whose intelligently obtuse pop is warming hearts, minds, and dance floors.
White Williams
New York–based White Williams isn’t interested in proving that laptop jocks can be as in-your-face as dudes doing rock.
A Go-Go goes
This Friday, January 26, your friendly neighborhood bowling alley/nightclub, the world-famous Milky Way Lounge and Lanes, transforms into a ’60s wonderland of go-go dancers, wild groove music, and the ubiquitous Brother Cleve. "Bossy (Drop Tha Beat remix)" (wma)
From ’Ye to mixtapes
To get the full taste of where hip-hop is at, you also have to seek out the unofficial releases, the mixtapes, which often have a bigger impact than the official albums.

Basstown throwdown
Although we’re still shivering in the icy depths of winter, things are heating up for Basstown Productions.
Boys Noize
Aficionados and connoisseurs of dance music qua dance music will find Oi Oi Oi a potent, concentrated dose of the undiluted pure stuff.
