Portland scene report: September 21, 2007

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  September 19, 2007

Thanks to MCNALLICA for this info: GENO’S hosted record crowds and had their biggest bar night of the year at Sunday’s JOE BLACK memorial concert. The benefit, for Black’s family after his accidental death September 7, had performances from NOT DEAD BUT SLEEPING, CRYPTIC OVERCAST, BREEDING STRENGTH, CLAYMORE MINDS, and COVERED IN BEES. We wish his friends and family all the best.

Much has been made of RYAN ADAMS’s unpredictability, and Monday night’s gig at the Merrill didn’t disappoint. After requesting numerous sound fixes and listening to incessant song requests and boorish, unfunny jokes from the seemingly well-meaning crowd, Adams gave up on his set with an hour remaining, knocking down his mic stand and stomping off stage. We feel bad for (most of) the paying customers, but hope that they, like us, have a newfound appreciation for what a badass Ryan Adams is.

We don’t think it’s been tried since the GIGAFONE RECORD, a musical periodical that never quite lived up to its promise, so we’re psyched about the TRYST HAUNT SERIES being launched by L’ANIMAUX TRYST FIELD RECORDINGS, whereby you pay a one-time subscription fee ($75 for a year) and receive seven-inch releases by BAD BUS, TEMPERA, CURSILLISTAS, and LIGHTNING STRIKE LIGHTNING this fall; BIRD MICROPHONE, WHITE LIGHT, BARRY BURST, the RED F, and SARAH RAMEY in the winter; and, well, you get the picture. Visit www.lanimauxtryst.com for the sign-up details — and hurry, as there are only 200 subscriptions available.

Speaking of songwriters contests, JASON SPOONER plays September 22 in NYC for the MOUNTAIN STAGE NEWSONG CONTEST finals. He won the New England regional over the likes of EMILIA DAHLIN back in July. If you want to hear what everybody played, check out www.newsongfestival.com.

See if you can’t get to Bleachers on September 27 at 6 pm for the finals of the SONGWRITERS CONTEST HAAKON KALLWEIT has been running this summer. We don’t know who the finalists are. Sorry.
