STEVE EARLE, WASHINGTON SQUARE SERENADE

Stars
This is Steve Earle’s big hug to his new home town, New York City, and his new wife (his seventh), country singer Allison Moorer, who repays the favor with frequent harmony vocals. There’s an urban-informed edge to much of the disc — Earle and producer John King, of the Dust Brothers, built the tracks atop beats, hip-hop style — but it’s also his least electric album in some years. In the opening “Tennessee Blues,” Earle bids goodbye to Nashville, and he quickly follows up with “Down Here Below,” singing the praises of a locally renowned Central Park hawk who’s “got him a penthouse view from the tip-top of the food chain.” The American political malaise is still very much on his mind, however. In “Steve’s Hammer,” a rousing folk-rocker dedicated to Pete Seeger, he promises that he won’t stop speaking out till “the air don’t choke and the ocean’s clean and the kids don’t die for gasoline.” And “City of Immigrants,” which features the Brazilian band Forro in the Dark, celebrates diversity with an appropriately Latin-esque sway.

Steve Earle | Townes
In case it wasn't clear already, Steve Earle idolizes Townes Van Zandt, the Texas singer-songwriter who died in 1997 after decades of soul-shaking music and life-obliterating demons.

Waiting for the Sun
Ganging up on the Sun gets caught between adventurous and jones-fulfilling and feels like an album in search of an identity.

The game is on for the reunited Spice Girls.
Revving it up
The Wrong Reasons have mustered a gallant comeback, and this time it’s for all the right reasons.
Forever young
When I first get Joan Baez on the phone, my burning question is what she thinks of the upcoming presidential election.
Allison Moorer
Working with producer Buddy Miller, Moorer takes an approach opposite to Lynne’s on the stripped-down Lovin’ , giving each track its own distinct personality.
John Mellencamp
John Mellencamp spent his last two studio albums in experimental mode, inviting Chuck D and India.Arie aboard 2001’s Cuttin’ Heads and digging into unvarnished country blues on ’03’s Trouble No More .
On the racks
Nelly Furtado, Frank Black, Pearl Jam, Fatboy Slim, and Luna.

NEW YORK DOLLS | DANCING BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS
| March 17, 2011
The new New York Dolls have now been around longer - and released more albums (three) - than the old New York Dolls, and they're commemorating that new longevity by letting go of any compulsion they may have still harbored to honor their designation as "punk-rock progenitors."
