Ween come out flapping and squawking on
La Cucaracha
, the skewed duo’s first studio album in four years — they’re still the same predictably unpredictable genre magpies of old. They fly around with beady eyes, they dive down onto anything shiny, and they take it back to their nest for no particular reason. The shiny objects? Smooth-jazz ear syrup courtesy of David Sanborn’s saxophone (“Your Party”). Nasal, quasi-British enunciations that evoke Syd Barrett (“Blue Balloon”). Double-digit minutes of Zappa jams (“Woman and Man”). Wisps of King Crimson prog fused with vocoder vocals (“Spirit Walker”). And on and on. The finished product is a cobbled-together dazzle that contorts your mouth into a 50-minute succession of grins and wows. Gene and Dean, those kings of flighty kleptomania, should be chirping proudly.

Video: The 12 acts you should've seen at Bonnaroo 2010
When I told my bosses here at the Phoenix that I was going to need some time off to attend Bonnaroo for my third year in a row, I expected to hear something along the lines of, "Have fun, don't die, and we'll see you when you get back."

The history of rock, as a technical story, is a mix of skilled craftsmen and total doofuses sticking their fingers in wall sockets over and over.
O RLY? YA RLY
“It smells like a middle-school dance,” said username andysad at the LemmingTrail message-board holiday party at Great Scott last Friday.
Oh ... uh, wow ... thanks?
Once upon a time, not all that long ago, holiday shopping was a fairly straightforward enterprise.

Spinning the local music CD lazy susan has turned up some pretty cool surprises.
Review: California Smile | Roof Came Off House
"There isn't any presupposed concept to our music," says California Smile keyboardist/piano man Victor Mansella while promoting the band's upcoming sophomore release Roof Came Off House (Limbus Infantus). "The music is intended to take the listener on his or her own adventure."

Sound Czech
Tom Stoppard’s Rock ’n’ Roll begins in 1968 in an English garden, where a piper perched atop an ivied wall is serenading a stretched-out blonde flower child.
