Remember THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID and HAVEN’T TALKED SINCE, those ska/rock kids who were better than you expected? DANIEL JAMES, a veteran of both bands, has launched the SOPHOMORE BEAT, doing some similar things, and they’ll be releasing their first disc this weekend, November 11, at the Big Easy with WHY HELLO and an acoustic performance by SPARKS THE RESCUE. It’s an early thing for the all-ages types, at 5:30 pm, and for $10 you both get in and get a copy of the EP, For the Time Being. On the following Tuesday, you’ll be able to pick up the disc via Bull Moose and iTunes.
Just because we like the RED SOX doesn’t mean we see ourselves as Bostonians. Still, the BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS have co-opted our Best Music Poll star PETE KILPATRICK by nominating him for an Outstanding Male Vocalist (indie) award. How dare they? Also, virtually everyone nominated for Outstanding Folk Artist of the Year is from Maine, including CATIE CURTIS, ELLIS PAUL, MARK ERELLI, and PATTY GRIFFIN. We thought the Boston folk scene was, like, wicked awesome. In other Boston news, our sister radio station to the south, WFNX (ah, how we miss when you were trying to be a Portland radio station), is sponsoring a contest on MUSICNATION.COM (go to the home page and click on “Competitions”) whereby the winner gets a development deal with EPIC. Surprise, surprise, Pete Kilpatrick is one of 10 semifinalists.
Looks like local rock-pop legend CINDY BULLENS will be getting out on the local scene more often now. She’s put together a new band, the REFUGEES, which includes WENDY WALDMAN and DEBORAH HOLLAND, and they’ll strutting their stuff for the first time at the St. Lawrence this Sunday, November 11. Um, even us “Sibilance” types think this is a big deal. Waldman is a big-time country producer and artist in her own right, with eight albums to her credit as a solo artist and a few more with her band BRYNDLE. She has a new disc coming out this year, My Time in the Desert, and she lives in LA (the California LA). Holland lives there, too, and has done cool stuff like sing with STEWART COPELAND and STANLEY CLARKE in ANIMAL LOGIC and releasing four solo albums. She’s also a full-time professor of music at Cal. State. The Refugees have an ambitious playing schedule over the next six months, so this definitely isn’t a capricious thing.
