Downtown Manhattan’s musical mad hatter, John Zorn, has been exploring his Jewish roots through a series of diverse compositions under the umbrella title Masada. The latest recorded batch features guitarist Ribot, who’s now the six-string’s pre-eminent avant-rocker and the king of cutting-edge roots guitar. His most interesting gigs, with T Bone Burnett and Tom Waits, allow him to flex both muscles. This savage, insane blowout pushes Ribot’s creative envelope even harder. He cites Sonny Sharrock, Jimi Hendrix, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and James Blood Ulmer with criminally bad-ass results, birthing the most daring instrumental guitar-driven rock and jazz album in years, one packed with tones and licks that ricochet from the ’60s to Mars, often in the same four bars. He’s joined by former Ornette Coleman drummer Calvin Weston and Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. On “Yezriel,” Ribot’s ax screams over a loping, riveting riff; “Dagiel” howls like a lost dog from Sharrock’s
Seize the Rainbow
(Enemy). If you know Ribot only through his brilliant sidemanning with Burnett and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, you don’t really know Ribot.

John Mellencamp | Life Death Love and Freedom
The arrangements are sparse compared with those of Mellencamp’s pop hits — many don’t even allow drums — but they’re rich with textural detail.

Gold Sounds were in the middle of a hellacious set of Pavement covers at the JVC-Newport Jazz Festival last Saturday afternoon when a woman who appeared to be in her 70s turned to me and said, “This is the sleeper of the day! I was going to get a lemonade and go back to Al Jarreau, but this is happening!” Slideshow: scenes from the JVC-Newport Jazz Festival
T Bone Burnett
The follow-up to Burnett’s 2006 masterpiece The True False Identity (Sony) is a dark, cynical, vaguely futuristic song cycle triggered by a Sam Shepard play.

The canny Texas-born songwriter T Bone Burnett hasn’t stepped into the footlights for — at least metaphorically — 14 years now.

COUNTRY STRONG | SOUNDTRACK
| January 11, 2011
This steaming pile of songs is emblematic of the state of mainstream country music — all artifice, no heart, calculated anthems written to formula and meant, like the film itself, to do no more than capitalize on the genre's current success and rob its undiscriminating fans.
