This year, California’s Concord label took ownership of Memphis’s greatest musical treasure chest, the Stax Records catalogue, and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company that made Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave, and the Staple Singers stars by opening the lid. What tumbled out included the PBS-special

Lee Fields and the Expressions | My World
It's hard to dislike Lee Fields. He's an almost archetypal jobbing soul singer in the shouter/grunter/talker/improviser tradition of Otis Redding and James Brown, and he's currently undergoing something of a revival as a Sharon Jones collaborator and featured vocalist for Eurohouse hits.

Smoken’ Joe’s Authentic Southern Barbeque
You wouldn’t have told Otis Redding to sing faster, so take a hint from him and slow down the cooking.
Loose Ends
It’s four in the morning and raining. I’m 27 today, feeling old, listening to my records, and remembering that things were different a decade ago.
Soul brothers
Hunter and Lidell's music shares something deeper than demographics: an abiding interest in the classic Southern R&B of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Both men prove that blue-eyed soul didn’t die with Hall & Oates.
Lobby Bar & Kitchen
We walked into Lobby the same day the Boston Globe ’s critic slammed the place — meaning, she gave it only one star.

| January 11, 2011
This steaming pile of songs is emblematic of the state of mainstream country music — all artifice, no heart, calculated anthems written to formula and meant, like the film itself, to do no more than capitalize on the genre's current success and rob its undiscriminating fans.
