Portland scene report: January 4, 2008

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  January 2, 2008

Sources have told the “Sibilance” staff that, following the February 23 rescheduled BRAVERY/CULT MAZE/HEADSTART! show, shows may become very scarce at THE STATION. Word is that EYE9D’s STEVE WOITASEK was hoping to take over the Station and improve it as a live-music venue, but plans fell through and he’s ready to walk away, leaving Portland’s sole real all-ages club in limbo (this may explain the cancelled New Year’s gig with DEAD SEASON, DAYS OF THE NEW, HIGHWAY JACKSON, and TWISTED ROOTS, but maybe not). Woitasek has pulled in a number of impressive acts this year (MR. LIF among them) and it will be a shame to see that end.

The last local CD of the year was released New Year’s Eve at GENO’S by none other than avant-blues growler MEANTONE, featuring songs about roller girls and a video, too. Special guests included JILL THE DANCING HOOCHIE MAMA.

Local photographer MATTHEW ROBBINS, who’s cut his teeth here at the Phoenix and at just about every publication in town, shooting musicians and much else, got himself a spot in SPIN. Pick up the January issue, turn to pages 16 and 17, and you’ll find his pics of BANG CAMARO, taken at the ASYLUM, as part of the “Soundcheck” section. Cool beans.

CIVIL DISTURBANCE drummer NIKKO has his very own VIC FIRTH drum sticks, with his name on them and everything. Something about that impresses us. We’re easy that way.

Did anybody catch the BERMUDA TRIANGLES? The new side project for RUSTIC OVERTONES TONY MCNABOE and JON ROODS dropped 30 songs during the Christmas show at the BIG EASY, impersonating, according to McNaboe, “those two guys who do Jimmy Buffett tracks at the beach bar, with mustaches, and the worst-sounding karaoke backing tracks we could find.”
