Have any other politicians used your songs?
No, not that I know of. [It has since come to light that a New Hampshire crowd waiting for Hillary Clinton was also treated to “Are You Gonna Go My Way.”]
Does that mean you’re endorsing Rudy?
We did not have a discussion. [Laughs.] I guess it just means that he likes the song.
Who are you supporting for president?
You know what, I’m still putting that together. I’m still going over every last issue. It’s easy to jump on and say, well, this person. I haven’t come out yet, but I’m definitely leaning in a certain direction. I just want to do a little more homework, to be responsible and really know what I’m talking about. A lot of people just jump, and I don’t do that. But it is a Democrat.
Is it Clinton or Obama?
Of course.
On your album 5, you’re credited with playing a Heineken bottle. How did you use it?
I used it as a percussion instrument. I didn’t have any cowbells or a-go-go bells in the studio, and I was in the Bahamas, so I grabbed what I could grab.
Do you ever get tired of being worshipped for your looks?
You know, I don’t think about it, I really don’t. All I really think about is music. People have definitely paid attention to the look of things, and people are interested in image a lot more than art or substance. I can’t make people think anything they don’t want to think. But it’s nothing I concern myself with.
