Stars
This young Brighton-based singer-songwriter isn’t Kate Nash, the ascendant heir to Lily Allen’s sass-pop throne, and neither is she the American
Grey’s Anatomy
star with whom she shares a name. So who is Kate Walsh? A sensitive soul with a broken heart and an acoustic guitar — no chance of confusing her with anyone else, right!? To be sure, the strength of Walsh’s sophomore set does not lie in stunning originality: out since last summer in the UK, where it burned up download charts after the then-unsigned singer submitted “Talk of the Town” to iTunes, the album offers the same brand of pretty sad-girl melancholy that Starbucks customers have been swimming in since Norah Jones’s breakout five years ago. What makes
Tim’s House
worth hearing is the particularly guileless quality of Walsh’s voice. If you thought Markéta Irglová sounded like an open book in
Once
, get a load of the way Walsh lays bare the disappointment that sets in after the drama of any break-up dies.

Colbie Caillat
This singer-songwriter is part of an emerging breed of Billboard-climbing folk-pop babes using YouTube and MySpace to build a devoted audience from the hard drive up.
The long view
Bob Blumenthal’s first book is out, and the wonder is that we didn’t get it sooner.
Fabulous fakes
If “The Basement Tapes” had been conceived for the Top 40, it might have sounded much like the Traveling Wilburys.
New Orleans notes
This year as last, the refrain at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was: “We’re back.”
Guest lists
What small, private lists like this remind us is that big, honking institutional lists are largely fictions, mirages of a consensus that no longer exists, if it ever really did in the first place.
Border crossings
An in-demand sidewoman brings her own thing to Newport. Jenny Scheinman, "Into the Clearing" (mp3) Jenny Scheinman, "Tango for Luna" (mp3)
Keys to our hearts
"I’ve never been someone that goes to the ‘it’ places and does the ‘it’ things and goes to the ‘it’ restaurant and go to the ‘it’ club. I like more off-the-beaten-path kind of things."
Longing for a Reminder
The Reminder is a soundtrack for watching your lover walk out the door.
Synapses firing
Back on Monday August 14, when Kenmore Square was the usual pre–Red Sox game Tasmanian clusterfuck, a smaller but no less devoted crowd began to form outside Avalon. Receiving End of Sirens, "Planning a Prison Break" (mp3)
BBC America?

DEVO | SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY
| July 01, 2010
Given the theory of de-evolution these Ohio brainiacs began expounding more than 30 years ago, it makes a sad kind of sense that Devo's first album since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps offers such a charmless, base-level version of the band's synth-addled new wave.

When Taio Cruz sings, "I can't live without you," in "Take Me Back," pop-song conventions tell us he's referring to a lover.
