MIKE LADD, NOSTALGIALATOR

Stars
“Fuck it, it’s a mind set,” Mike Ladd notes amid a dense verbal and aural barrage titled “Trouble Shot.” Then he concludes the verse with the caveat “It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.” These are useful guidelines with which to approach
Nostalgialator
. Fans of the poet/MC/beatsmith’s work under the Infesticons/Majesticons moniker will hear echoes of that project’s production sensibility here, but none of its MC collaborations. If
Nostalgialator
resembles anything in Ladd’s diverse (and extensive) body of work, it’s his 2000 album Welcome to the
Afterfuture
(Ozone), whose soundscape of future-shock breakbeats and layered lyrical musings cited (and sampled) scores of left-field sources like Firesign Theatre and the Jetsons. Here the mercurial Ladd uses grunge-era Sub Pop also-rans Tad as a referent. What’s more,
Afterfuture
did not serve up anything as bombastic or provocative as “Afrostatic,” “Black Orientalist,” or the ebullient “Wild Out Day,” all of which showcase Ladd’s skill at fusing his passions for punk and hip-hop. More Bad Brains than Kid Rock,
Nostalgialator
offers fresh hope for rock/rap cross-pollinations — and for anyone who thinks Rage Against the Machine ended the discussion.

Since debuting as Coldcut in 1987 with the sampledelic Say Kids, What Time Is It? white-label EP, Britain’s self-proclaimed “original dance-floor hooligans” have been all about culture jamming and just plain jamming.
Anarchy in Medford
Sitting in on Tufts lecturer Michael T. Fournier’s course “History of Punk Rock,” offered via the university’s Experimental College, one can’t help but think of Johnny Rotten’s famous final words: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”
Blasting off
You might not buy this, given the band’s propensity for reunion gigs, but the Neutral Nation show at the Living Room on Saturday will most likely be their last.

Behold! The prime of the approaching fall local rock crop.
All in the Fam
Halfway through my interview with the Allston-based alt-hop collective Fameless Fam about their upcoming showcase at Wonder Bar this Tuesday, Will from the posse's glitch-minded duo Time Crisis mentions that he went to high school in Pittsburgh with rising rap sensation Wiz Khalifa.

Three for all
The music is equally adept at provoking headbangs, lighter flicks, or slightly arthritic hippie wiggles.
PETA’s Dan Mathews says all animals are equal
With its boldest gambit yet — offering $1 million to the person who can create “commercially viable” fake meat — PETA continues to push boundaries in its fight for animal rights.

| September 27, 2011
"Witch house" isn't the best tag for an act to get saddled with straight out of the gate, and when Balam Acab's first EP, See Birds, dropped about a year ago, that term had less of its current flash-in-the-pan feel.

Independent Italo-disco throwback record label Italians Do It Better is rooted as deeply in punk-rock DIY as it is in dance 12-inches from the '70s and drugged-out '80s club-night afterparties.

In the dreamy, spacious world of How To Dress Well (one-man band Tom Krell), everything is light: the tone, the production, the vocals, the touch of each aural element.
