Portland scene report: February 15, 2008

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  February 13, 2008

More details are trickling out about the VELOUR release of RUSTIC OVERTONES’ Light at the End on March 18. Firstly, “Black Leather Bag” has been removed. “Sibilance” was fond of its swagger, but we won’t be too crushed. Secondly, “Valentine’s Day Massacre” has been added, and it features IMOGEN HEAP, whom the “Sibilance” staff like more when she put out an album under the moniker FROU FROU (seriously). Thirdly, Bull Moose will have a promo piece available that’s a 7” vinyl single of “Light at the End,” with “Sector Z,” a David Bowie-having tune from a promo-only release the group did while with Arista, as the B-side. Cool beans.

Speaking of Rustic types, AS FAST AS, featuring SPENCER ALBEE, have a new disc they’ll be releasing March 4 (maybe). More details to come, but be forewarned that the album art is minorly disturbing in a Spencer’s-naked kind of way.

The RPM CHALLENGE, where musicians are charged with recording an entire 10-song album in the month of February by the editors of the Wire, down in Portsmouth, is a big enough deal now that they don’t need us to be pushing it. But still: www.rpmchallenge.com. They’ve already got 2100 bands/musicians signed up. We’re impressed, per usual.

Not sure if you caught it or not: JAKE ROCHE is back in town and has renamed his band GHOST PARTY. If it’s half as fun as the Ghost Bar in Vegas, it’ll be a whiz-bang affair.
