Jazz in the clubs — and the museums

FINE FINGERS: Guitarist Lionel Loueke comes to the Regattabar.

More and more, museums are getting into the live-music scene. Jazzwise, the ICA (100 Northern Ave, Boston; 617.478.3103) hosts the “NEW MUSIC NOW” series with the Masada String Trio and pianist Uri Caine playing the music of John Zorn (April 17) and the series curators, reedmen Ned Rothenberg and Marty Ehrlich, leading their respective bands (April 18). Meanwhile, the “JAZZ AT THE GARDNER” series (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 280 the Fenway, Boston; 617.278.5156) continues with vocal group Syncopation (April 17).

SCULLERS (DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel, 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston; 617.562.4111) has jazz bassist Harvie Swartz in his Afro-Cuban guise as Harvie S. (April 2); Branford Marsalis’s piano man Joey Calderazzo (April 3); trumpeter Dave Douglas (April 8); the jazz-vocal showcase known as MOSS, with Kate McGarry, Theo Bleckmann, Peter Eldridge, and Lauren Kinhan (April 9); saxophonist David Sánchez (April 11-12); composer Carla Bley and her trio with bassist Steve Swallow and Andy Shepard (April 16); singer Karryn Allison (April 17); Travis Sullivan’s Björkestra with their big-band take on the Icelandic chanteuse (April 23); Boston go-to bassist Bruce Gertz (April 30), and pianist Taylor Eigsti leading a quartet with guitarist Julian Lage (May 14).

The REGATTABAR (Charles Hotel, 1 Bennett St, Harvard Square, Cambridge; 617.395.7757) offers the Kenny Barron Trio (March 21-22); pianist Aruan Ortiz with saxophonist Greg Osby (March 25); Bill Frisell’s 858 Quartet with violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, and cellist Hank Roberts (March 27-29); Afro-Cuban dance band Obbini Tumbao (April 4); Ari Hoenig’s Punk Bop trio (April 8); pianist Kevin Harris (April 16); the Kenny Werner Trio (April 19); singer Sheila Jordan (April 23); saxophonist Kenny Garrett (April 24-25); a double bill of guitarist Issi Rozen and pianist Gilad Barkan with their bands (April 30); guitarist Lionel Loueke celebrating the release of his Blue Note debut (May 8); the Vijay Iyer Trio (May 13); piano legend Ahmad Jamal (May 15-17); and trombonist Conrad Herwig with “The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter” (May 24).

RYLES (212 Hampshire St, Cambridge; 617.876.9330) brings in saxophonist/composer Jon de Lucia (March 21); jazz-world folk ensemble Musaner (March 26); pianist Leo Genovese with his Chromatic Gauchos (March 28); flutist Yulia Musayelyan (April 9); Anita Coelho’s Brazilian Ensemble (April 16); the husband/wife team of singer Carmen Marsicio and guitarist Björn Wennås (April 30); and Hankus Netsky and Linda Chase’s pan-cultural Another Realm (May 21).

The REAL DEAL JAZZ CLUB AND CAFÉ (41 Second St, Cambridge; 617.876.7777) has Boston diva Rebecca Parris (April 19); a double bill of singer Dominique Eade’s quartet and pianist Laszlo Gardony’s trio (April 25); Dwight Ritcher and Nicole Nelson’s Little Big Band (May 9); and Colombian singer-songwriter Marta Gómez (May 16). Real Deal/Water Music booker Fenton Hollander is also presenting the Dave Brubeck Quartet at Sanders Theatre (45 Quincy St, Cambridge; June 13) and the Berklee Performance Center (136 Mass Ave, Boston; June 14).

Highlights at the LILY PAD (1353 Cambridge St, Cambridge; 617.395.1393) include pianist Ruby BC and the Music Factor (April 5); pianist Andrew Oliver’s sextet (April 21); guitarist Fred Woodard’s trio (April 24 and May 22); pianist Pandelis Karayorgis’s trio (April 27 and May 27)); the quintet of pianist Joe Berkovitz and saxophonist Allan Chase (May 18); and improv band Satellite (May 19).

And keep your eyes peeled here and at jazzboston.org for news of JAZZ WEEK (April 26–May 4), which will feature the usual South End block party as well as a plethora of concerts and special events all over town.
