Portland scene report: March 14, 2008

Sibilance starts now
By PORTLAND PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  March 12, 2008

Harpswell band the STREAKING HEALYS, whom you might have seen at the White Heart last weekend, have got their debut album, Loveless (not to be confused with Loverless), up on WWW.OURTRACKS.COM, an interesting Web site to check out in general if you’re into indie music. And who isn’t? No one reading “Sibilance,” we’re sure.

Speaking of last weekend, LABSEVEN’s March 8 show at the Big Easy was the first time they’ve had the whole group on stage in more than a year. Seems they’re gaining steam from work in the STUDIO with JIM BEGLEY as a new album develops.

We’ve got some more details on The Space, the new SLY-CHI disc. The first single is “Why,” which you might even be able to hear on Q97 (that may be a lie, but Sly-Chi did do their morning show), and the band will be playing release gigs in New York City at the Bitter End and at the Rusty Nail in Stowe, Vermont, before the three-hour, star-studded spectacular you can catch at the BIG EASY April 25.

Housekeeping note: The Web site we sent you to for MAINELY MUSICIANS TV last week should have been WWW.BANDDMUSICSERVICE.COM. Yes, there are two Ds.

EMILIA DAHLIN is back in the studio, this time down at WERS (the Emerson College studio), working on a new EP with long-time bassist ADAM FREDERICK. No release date yet, but look for a songwriting turn affected by Frederick’s collaboration.

Haven’t heard BILLY WINN’s country-pop? Well, you won’t hear it on the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL’s Dangerous Encounters either, but you will see Winn taking on the role of “Nikita the polar bear dude” March 16 at 8 and 11 pm. Why? We’re unsure.
