Cross-pollinization

Matters & Dunaway, and a noisy night at the Piano Craft Guild

Matters & Dunaway

MATTERS & DUNAWAY were scheduled to open for Turzi this Monday at the Middle East upstairs, and when the French group were forced to cancel their US tour, Thomas Gallagher and André Obin stepped into the breach. The local duo were already poised to release a new EP, Feel the Future (Symmetric), so the show has been transformed into a CD-release party. “We are not used to headlining, by any means,” says multi-instrumentalist Obin. “But everyone in attendance will receive a free copy of our new EP, and we have fresh T-shirts for sale too.”

Matters & Dunaway’s music has always been heavily indebted to the atmospheric electronics of Boards of Canada and hazy shoegazer rock. But lately they’ve been mining a poppier vein, complete with vocals. The bill should be a study in contrasts, with the electro-funk stylings of PLUS MOVE and the psych-improv eight-piece CONCORD BALLET ORCHESTRA PLAYERS rounding things out.

For an elephantine dose of eclecticism, this Saturday there’s the third installment of the CROSS-POLLENIZATION CREATIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL at the Piano Craft Guild in the South End. Organized by Semata Productions, the day-long experimental-music fest runs the gamut from the achingly quiet to the wrenchingly loud. It’s a great opportunity to check out a broad spectrum of Boston improvisers, electronic musicians, and noise artists who’ll include low-volume improv luminaries Nmperign, percussionist Eli Keszler, the name-says-it-all Orgy of Noise, and the key-pounding Boston Typewriter Orchestra.
