More important, Most Valuable Player is ace. It’s a bed record, 38 minutes of napping-lion contrabass, undulating melodies, and brave falsettos. All 12-string panic attacks and harmonious longings and mellifluous intonations, MVP sometimes makes me want to fucking cry and I don’t fucking cry. It feels deeply private. Speaking of which: that long-ago road trip of a night, I ended up curled up on a drafty Newburyport floor, reflective and sleepless and half-drunk and alone and secretly relieved. MVP kind of sounds like that.
