Notes on Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and the Unseen

Revolutionary Snake Ensemble

“As far as I know,” says saxophonist KEN FIELD, “Forked Tongue is the only CD ever released to include songs by both ORNETTE COLEMAN and BILLY IDOL.” Those songs would be “Chippie” and “White Wedding,” respectively. Field, who plays in BIRDSONGS OF THE MESOZOIC and the REVOLUTIONARY SNAKE ENSEMBLE, is talking about his latter group, who have a CD-release gig at Ryles on May 30. Best short description of the RSE? Field: “A funk and experimental brass band.” . . . Maybe it’s the George Clooney effect. On May 15, Felt is holding an event called “FASHION FOR DARFUR,” which sounds so wrong, but the end result is good: proceeds will be donated to three Darfur-aid organizations. Fashion shows will be in the categories of Rock ’n’ Roll (complete with live music on the first floor by Split Infinity), Eco-Chic, Hollywood Glamour, and Sports. Let the dowdy get rowdy. . . . Hardcore punk-rockers the UNSEEN kick off a national tour with WAR TAPES and TIGER ARMY at the Middle East downstairs May 13.
