Head to P.A.’s Lounge nice and early on May 17 for the sleeper guitar show of the year: ex-Melvin JOE PRESTON sludges solo as THRONES, Orthrelm’s MICK BARR charms solos as if they were cobras as OCRILIM, ex–Common Colder KEVIN MICKA plays brand new ANIMAL HOSPITAL material, and, though they’re more about pounding than shredding, the duo of VVLTVRE are more than noisy enough for any given roomful of tolerant post-metalheads. . . . What’s-her-name that cute blonde girl from The L Word has a band called UH HUH HER who play the Paradise that same night. For some of you, this is awesome news. . . . Surprisingly promising South Boston upstarts COMMA bring their Burma-and-Flipper-tinged post-punk to T.T. the Bear’s Place on May 21. Tip: get in with them now for guest-list spots later. Bonus tip: make them a new logo.

Sad hits, Do over, Y'all come back now . . ., More
- Sad hits
The cover of Damon & Naomi: The Sub Pop Years is framed like a Polaroid, and the image itself — a bluish superimposition of Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang — reads like an unfinished double exposure on old film, the pair caught mid bloom.
- Do over
I tried hard to be born earlier, but it didn't work. As a result, I've had to contend with an irritatingly positioned cultural blind spot (roughly 1976–1986) that currently occupies all that open space once filled with childhood memories.
- Y'all come back now . . .
I've always liked the idea of there being some weight to the "nines," meaning: if you're a year, and you're going to perch yourself at the very edge of a decade, you'd better be ready to represent.
- Gay bash
I had that same feeling I always get at the end of big gay happenings: how far we’ve come. How good that is. And how did I spend $90?
- Let it all hang out
It’s hard to feel too threatened by an IT administrator in SpongeBob boxers sipping a Long Island iced tea through a stir straw.
- Gnarls Barkley + Hercules and Love Affair
To the cynic, the scene milling around in front of the sold-out Wilbur could merely have been proof of the power of a hit single.
- Mixed, nuts
If you thought Diplo peaked with Hollertronix or plateau’d with M.I.A. or repeated himself with Santogold, you really need to stop thinking and go dancing or something.
- I think I’m gonna throw down
Wanna get in on the music-licensing boom? Be smart like the Motion Sick.
- The beat goes on
It’s been seven years since DFA Records authorized scads of ostensibly soulless hipsters to relax a little and shake their asses the way young people ought to.
- Newgaze
You get all the shimmering, over-processed guitars, all the feather-light vocals, and all the intense volume without the unsightly Doc Martens or ugly Beetlejuice tights.
- Irish, but not Celtic
With the Boston Celtic Music Festival taking over a host of venues January 9 and 10 it can be easy to forget that not all Irish music is . . . Celtic music.
