One gets the feeling that it’s not always easy for Lidell — a man prone to making obscure Nigel Godrich jokes and alluding to fictitious sponsorship deals with Laphroaig — to communicate with the average listener. “I’ve compared this album to a kind of ready-to-wear collection from a fashion designer. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the collection is not the designer’s best work, it just means it’s more presentable, the kind of stuff that people might actually listen to. I kind of meant to make a generous thing that people would really enjoy, that might enrich their lives. That, for me, was a really tough challenge.”
