The “CLASH OF THE TITANS” series — where two random collections of local musicians (well, sometimes actual bands) cover, say, Frank Zappa and Mike Patton, as though they were those two guys going head-to-head in a battle of the bands — that’s been on-again and off-again at the BIG EASY is definitely on-again and the organizers have opened it wide open to just about any musician who calls dibs out to the right person. Ask around if you want in.

As you get excited for the new JERKS OF GRASS album, be on the lookout for JOE WALSH, the first graduate of the Berklee College of Music on the mandolin, who sometimes sits in with them and is currently playing in a mandolin quartet with Jerks guitarist JASON PHELPS. The guy’s a savant. Walsh is also playing at 8 pm Sunday at One Longfellow Square, with his bluegrass-y band JOY KILLS SORROW.

A new organization, VOLUNTEER LAWYERS FOR THE ARTS, is getting things set up above the NORTH STAR CAFÉ. If things work out right, you’ll be able to kick down a yearly membership fee in exchange for dirt-cheap legal advice on things like contracts for copyrights.

RCA has announced it will release RAY LAMONTAGNE’s third album, Gossip in the Rain, September 9. He’s recorded again with producer ETHAN JOHNS, but this time has used more of a band for the backing, with touring mates JENNIFER CONDOS on bass and ERIC HEYWOOD on guitar. There’s also a couple guest spots from singer/songwriter LEONA NAESS.
