Notes on Rose Polenzani

Rose Polenzani

It’s been a big year for local singer-songwriter ROSE POLENZANI — and rightly so. She spent a week this summer opening shows for the INDIGO GIRLS (she even got to belt out a third harmony she’d been nursing for “Closer to Fine”), she’s delighted Lizard Lounge audiences with her Tuesday-residency performances, and she’s recorded one hell of an album in When the River Meets the Sea, which will see national release on October 1 — and which, I’m sorry to report, does not feature any singing otters. The album, her fifth, is a collaboration with local rag-jug-jam juggernaut SESSION AMERICANA, and it may well be the one that finally gets her the attention her sly, swoonworthy singing voice and delicate compositional skills deserve. It captures the intimate folksy charm both acts offer live, so pick up a copy at one of their two release shows at Lizard Lounge tonight and tomorrow (September 25-26). And show up early — you (and everyone else) will want a good seat for this.

With the title of his latest album, this lovably polyglot erstwhile (and unwitting) “freak” folkie turned gallery darling and global lounge lizard asks a valid question. Indeed, what will we be this time?

It’s been a rough couple of months for Randolph Chabot, a/k/a Deastro.

You know the old saying: you can lead a horse to dance music, but you can’t make it sign up for a Beatport account.
  •   RISQUÉ MANAGEMENT  |  October 28, 2009
One of the worst things you can do as a person-who-writes-about-music is to ask an artist which of his songs is his favorite. For one thing, it makes you sound kind of dull. For another, you’re just gonna put the dude in a bad mood.
  •   THE VERY BEST | WARM HEART OF AFRICA  |  October 27, 2009
This proper full-length debut of the Very Best — a star-crossed collaboration of Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya and London-based production duo Radioclit — should work better than it does.
