In Wild Combination, ex-Modern Lovers bassist Ernie Brooks says Russell’s music is “out of its time,” and he’s right. Part of what made Russell so good in so many genres was that he felt out of place in all of them; there’s nothing like a little nervousness to keep your intelligence up. What made him so special was that his gifts for melody and rhythm were equivalent, and that he seemed to only be at home inside his head. Russell’s best music will always sound magically out of place.
Wild Combination screens at the MFA October 30 - November 7 | 465 Huntington Ave., Boston | $10 |www.mfa.org; Love Is Overtaking Me comes out October 28 on Audika Records,www.audikarecords.com
