CLAY FERNALD (PUBLICIST, MIDDLE EAST) "We have a great relationship with 'FNX. They're our touchstone. They consistently help us promote our shows and give a lot of airtime to local bands. They are a pretty big company, but [they] give us and the bands the attention they deserve — even better than college radio or mainstream ones. It's our most important relationship in town."
CHRISTOPHER PAPPAS (SINGER-GUITARIST-KEYBOARDIST, EVERYDAY VISUALS) "They do a great job in promoting [New England Product] on their schedule, and they're promoting shows around town. Getting played on the radio is one piece of the pie; the other piece is how invested they are on the club level. We've done a few shows, and they promote, give away tickets. They do a good job of catering to a lot of bands and genres."
MICHAEL CREAMER (MANAGER, KAY HANLEY, SUPERDRAG, TODD THIBAUD) " 'FNX was instrumental in breaking Cleo, the Gravel Pit, and the Sheila Divine in Boston. When 'FNX started, there were only 10 to 15 alternative rock stations in the country, and 'FNX was one of the first people looked to. There's a scene in every city, but this scene is tight, especially in the '90s, and 'FNX elevated them from the scene into more of the mainstream, 'FNX airplay brought attention from outside the scene, too, from labels and publications."
ALEX NECOCHEA (GUITARIST, BANG CAMARO) "From a music fan's perspective, I was drawn to 'FNX when I moved to the area 10 years ago because of their obvious support of the local music scene. I could learn about new groups from Boston, like the Sheila Divine and, later, the Dresden Dolls, while combing the airwaves looking for that Blur song where they yell "Woo-hoo!" A few years down the line, when I was getting involved in local music with my own bands, 'FNX was the only station willing to play my music. They have shown unwavering support of grassroots local music. In a typically reactive radio industry, 'FNX has not forgotten about the little guy. I think that says a lot about their commitment to promoting worthwhile entertainment. And their taste in music ain't so bad, neither. Plus, they have been kind enough to let Bang Camaro drink beer in their studio. I think they [have enforced] a drinking ban there ever since our last visit. Sorry, everybody!"
KEITH DAKIN (DJ, 2003–2007, AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR, 2007–PRESENT) "Since day one, WFNX has been all about new underground music, whether its local or national, and tries to balance them both and help the music community. That's not bullshit, that's true. Dave Duncan does the local music on Sunday, and we select the highlights to play at 9:30 on weeknights. The station has always made a commitment to support local music, even as we've grown over the years. And we still have a very vibrant music scene."
