Body moving

By CHRIS FUJIWARA  |  March 30, 2006

Adam Yauch: Yeah, it is a lot more like a club show in that way. You know, we kind of came up playing club shows and being a punk band, and in that scene we were friends with all the people in the audience, or we were always going to see other bands. Sorta like a group of people and everyone’s in bands, everyone in the audience is in bands so you all go see each other. In a way it sort of reminds me of that feel or that time, everyone doing something together.

ThePhoenix.com: And at the same time, you don’t lie about it, in the sense that you can see the security guards protecting you also. So you’re not trying to conceal the fact that you are stars, after all. So there is a distance, but you kind of get over the distance.

Adam Yauch: Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, those security guards are kinda there but I don’t know that they really have to do a whole lot. Maybe, I don’t know. Maybe they’re doing more than I know.

ThePhoenix.com: Then there’s some other beautiful moments in the film, like the girl dancing. And then it’s inter-cut with Mike I guess.

Adam Yauch: Yeah, I love that. Yeah, she really is imitating what Mike is doing, like if you watch it in sequence, it’s almost like Mike dances that way and then she sees it, and then she dances that way also. And then, kinda like we’re just chopping that up and playing with it.

ThePhoenix.com: Was the result of the footage that you got back from these 50 people, was it kind of what you were looking for, is it what you had in mind?

Adam Yauch: Yeah, very much so. I had seen this clip that somebody had shot on their camera phone and uploaded on our website and I thought it looked really cool. And that’s where I got the idea to document a concert this way. And it does, definitely, like the footage we go does that, you know, gets that kind of feel, that kind of energy.

ThePhoenix.com: I mean, I love things like the guy going to the urinal, or showing the concession stand. These are obviously things you don’t see in the average concert film.

Adam Yauch: Yeah, I mean, we’re just trying to cover the whole gambit of everything’s that’s going on there. Like, security and fans, and the different people in the bands, and the different people working on the tour, just kinda the whole thing. It’s just an interesting bunch of people coming together to create this event, so it’s kinda cool to see all different aspects of it.

ThePhoenix.com: It’s also a good moment when the camera follows you as you take the elevator going offstage on the long trek to the back of the stadium for the encore. Was that filmed by one of the 50 people too?

Adam Yauch: No. We had a couple people from our team that had cameras also. And also, we do video that part of the show, when we did it every night on tour, because part of the way people in the audience can see where we are is we had someone with us that has a transmitter that would go send a signal down, and then it would be shown on the screens on the stage, so that was going on also. But we had another camera person running with us as well.
