MTV.com is one of my favorites, because it'll report events so insignificant that no other news source would bother. Its headlines tend toward the literal and inane:
"ASHLEE SIMPSON-WENTZ 'SO EXCITED' ABOUT 'MELROSE PLACE' " | No linguistic trickery with this one, it's just unusually dense with abomination. If it doesn't creep your nards up into your body cavity a little bit, you're either female or totally fucking hopeless.
"USHER, AKON, AND MORE HONOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE DO SOMETHING AWARDS" | The Do Something Awards? Sheesh, I know we're kinda lame, but are we really setting the bar this low for participation in society?
"JOE JONAS EXPLAINS WHY HE DID 'SINGLE LADIES' " | I thought this kid was supposed to be celibate, but at least he's not doing married ladies.

- The Big Hurt: Wascally wappers
Lame as Marilyn Manson may be, I wouldn't wish his fans on him if he were my worst enemy.
- Dirty Projectors | Bitte Orca
You're going to be hearing a lot more about this album than you might actually hear from it. Why? Because it's far simpler to succumb to a lulling, repetitive chorus of praise than it is to surrender to the pull of Dave Longstreth's often uncertain seas.
- Hard act to follow
Shortly after Dirty Projectors completed their mind-blowing set opening up for TV on the Radio at the House of Blues, vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Angel Deradoorian and Amber Coffman came back on stage.
- Suite relief
For Longstreth, the pressure's been ratcheted up following the online leak a couple of months ago of Dirty Projectors' fifth LP, Bitte Orca (Domino) which is finally, officially out this week.

- Review: Mayhem Fest 2009
A mere 10 minutes after setting foot in the Comcast Center, my editor and I witness our first major act of Mayhem Fest carnage. Actually, we couldn't have missed it -- it was aimed directly at us.

- Faux fi
A few years ago, before Merrill Garbus was touring the world as Tune-Yards (she spells it tUnE-yArDs — but we're going to pretend we didn't know that), she was deep into puppets. Following her studies at Smith, the Connecticut native relocated to Putney, Vermont, to join the Sandglass Theater company.
- Band of outsiders
The Beatings got back from their eighth US tour the day before, but they’re already reconvening over at frontman Eldridge Rodriguez’s misplaced little two-story beach house in Lower Allston. I do a double take on the way through the cute picket fence.
- Carnival of the absurd
“War-time full-frontal drugs, sex-tank armor plate!” Exactly.
