GUSTER are gearing up for the June 20 release of their fifth studio album, Ganging Up on the Sun (Reprise), by going green. The band’s Campus Consciousness Tour finds them traveling on a biodiesel-fueled bus. Organized in conjunction with Reverb, the nonprofit environmental organization founded by guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner and his wife, the tour aims to educate, empower, and entertain the group’s college fan base. The new album was recorded last year in the Nashville home studio of multi-instrumentalist fourth member, Joe Pisapia, and at the famed Allaire studio in upstate New York with Ron Aniello, who produced 2003’s Keep It Together (Reprise). “We pushed ourselves,” says Gardner. “I think our slowest song, our fastest song, our loudest song, our most sincere song, are all on this record.” So is the band’s longest song, “Ruby Falls,” which clocks in at more than seven minutes. They’ll play a Bank of America Pavilion show later this summer, then join the Barenaked Ladies for five Carnival cruise dates on the “Ships and Dip” tour in January ’07 . . . . ISIS have written 80 percent of a new album and will begin recording June 8 at the Bomb Shelter in Los Angeles, with long-time producer/engineer Matt Bayles behind the board. “There’s even more focus on atmosphere and some of the more textural elements of our music,” says singer/guitarist Aaron Turner, who also runs Hydrahead Records, “but oddly enough, I think this record in certain respects has also gotten heavier again, and not necessarily the way our old records were heavy. It’s not quite as industrial.” Turner says four as-yet-untitled new tracks should be on their setlist for the band’s May 6 show at the Middle East. Also look for a new DVD in August, featuring live performances and other goodies.
