Making waves

Six Star General invade Newport
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  July 29, 2009

A packed weekend begins THURSDAY (the 30th) when the ladies take over at the Hi-Hat, with MELISSA FERRICK and locals Seriously Fierce (aka Heather Rose and Keturah) opening, call 401.453.6500. There's reggae-rock at Club Hell with INNOCENT UPRISING, MARK CUTLER & FRIENDS fire it up at Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290), or head to the Wheelhouse Tavern (401.284.0246) for FUNGUS AMUNGUS. SIX STAR GENERAL in boat shorts? Not likely, but they will be in Newport on FRIDAY (the 31st) at Jimmy's Saloon (401.846.5121); Six Star's first live album is due in August, and plan to hear new stuff from an upcoming full-length due in December. Nice. THE PROPELLERS, THE DIEPODS, and TWO GUYS AND ANOTHER GUY open, with no cover all night. Acclaimed rhythm kings SANTA MAMBA take over the Newport Blues Café; $10 in advance, call 401.841.5510. Other Friday highlights include DENNIS EMSLEY & GAMBLIN' HANDS at the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200), bluesy roots done right with BROKEDOWN SERENADE and THE GAMBEES at the Blackstone (401.726.2181), or the polar opposite throwing down at Cats (401.722.0150) with locals RHYTHMAFIA and BOGUS TRIZZY, with Staten Island rhymer SCOTT JAMES. Protect your neck (and your blunt) when METHOD MAN & REDMAN go stage-diving at Lupo's, with the irrepressible GHOSTFACE kicking it off (I'm praying for "Apollo Kids"), call 401.331.5876. Jerky's Bar (401.621.2244) continues to book heavyweight rap shows, and SATURDAY (the 1st) indie icon Cage throws a CD release party, call 401.621.2244. And don't forget the NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 50 at Fort Adams State Park. Saturday acts include the Decemberists and Fleet Foxes, while Deer Tick stops home SUNDAY (the 2nd), along with Neko Case, Josh Ritter, and plenty more. Hit FolkFestival50.com for tickets and full schedule. The Knickerbocker in Westerly is back in a big way, hosting THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS Friday through Sunday (the 2nd). Tickets are $30 per night, or get a three-night pass for $70 (401.596.4225).
