Music Seen: Roots and Tendrils

Worth the drive
By SONYA TOMLINSON  |  September 2, 2009

Belfast as a destination just got more desirable with the addition of Roots and Tendrils. Nestled downtown, the light from the plate-glass windows and lush landscaped front lawn complete with brilliant colored chairs and lawn sculptures invite anyone heading down to the stone's-throw-away waterfront to peer inside.

Opened in June, R&T is a multi-use art space that serves as a gallery/shop by day and entertainment venue by night. Husband-and-wife owners Bub and Meg Fournier are even managing to get notable bands to make the two-hour-plus trek from Portland. Last Friday's bill included our own Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and Isobell along with Belfast natives Full Contact Kitty.

The stage is still unpainted and raised barely a foot off the floor. It is illuminated by a string of variously sized paper lanterns that hang from the ceiling and make for just the right glow on the artists. Spectators sit, stand, and sprawl on the hardwood floor and settle into the warm atmosphere.

There is a clear feeling that you are somewhere that has been transformed from what it was earlier in the day. You wonder where the rolling rack of shirts and the table of handmade wares you saw earlier have gone to. It's as if you're in someone's cozy studio apartment and you've moved all the furniture out of the way to make room. R&T is resourceful and getting the most out of their space.

Cups and water are provided on the counter and someone was kindly circulating a snack of Nutty Bars that showed up in my seat when I went to get some very fresh ocean air between sets.

It is worth the drive and the locals seem psyched.
