THE EVER-SHRINKING PARTY

Last week, State Representative John Savage of East Providence dropped out of the Republican Party. Your superior correspondents were looking at the BeloJo's on-line story by Kathy "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" Gregg when we scrolled down a little further to see the responses by readers.

One of the comments: "Those darn Republicans. All they want to do is save taxpayer dollars and spend less. Shame on them."

But here's the problem: that's not all the increasingly extreme GOP wants to do. It wants to end reproductive rights for women and block the movement towards same-sex marriage. It wants to maintain untenable defense spending, undermine health care reform, and totally ignore the ever-increasing gap between rich and poor.

We don't know what, precisely, pushed Representative Savage over the edge. But we think his decision is totally understandable.

CORRECTION

Jorge was wrong, wrong, wrong last week when, in this space, he stated veteran Vo Dilun broadcaster Steve McDonald had been appointed as the new public address announcer for the Boston Red Sox. Steve did fill in on Memorial Day, but he has not been hired full time. Jorge regrets the error.
