And the paper's monthly holiday coverage — from Plough Sunday (January 9) to Moroccan Throne Day (July 31) to Left-Handers Day (August 13) to Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) to Yuri's Night (April 12), remembering the first human being launched into space — is unmatched.

Berendes says his greatest moments of satisfaction with the paper haven't been big journalistic scoops, but more prosaic pleasures.

"It's stuff like seeing it as trash blowing down the street. It was raining one time and I saw somebody use it as a hat," he says. "Really it's nice to see your project be just another thing in the world, you know?"
