Founder and director of the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island, he had a knack for good works and sizzle, alike.
Doyle brought the World Scholar-Athlete Games to the state and launched National Sportsmanship Day. The bold names who spoke at the institute include Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
But a state audit report and a series of Providence Journal stories suggest the sportsman has committed more than his share of fowls.
A $575,000 legislative grant for a new building on the URI campus yielded only a shell. And Doyle allegedly used institute funds to buy property on a resort island in North Carolina, pay his American Express bill, and fund his daughter's education at Oberlin College.
No evidence, yet, that the institute paid for his turkey feed. But it seems only a matter of time.
