Kafkaesque

By PHILLIPE AND JORGE  |  June 12, 2013

P&J sometimes fear for the future, when an Internet-saturated generation who never set foot in an actual library will rule and no one will have what we like to call “institutional memory.” Then we’ll start hearing facts like “back in 1998, when Tom Cruise won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his bravura performance in Scarface. . . .”

Unsung hero

Unless you’re heavily involved in state government or the local environmental community, the name Anthony Simeone will not ring any bells. That’s too bad, because Tony will be stepping down as executive director of the RI Clean Water Finance Agency in July, and, when he does, we will lose one of the best administrators the state has known for the past 19 years.

The CWFA helps fund municipal clean drinking water and wastewater management improvement projects, and Tony has had as much to do with environmental progress in Little Rhody as anyone during his tenure. His priorities, facts, and figures, have always been tighter than a drum in a world of mismanaged state initiatives. The CWFA actually has a AAA bond rating, which is virtually unheard of in Biggest Little financial circles.

And rather than being a faceless bureaucrat, Tony is an out-and-out hot ticket with a great personality, known to have shared more than a few sharpeners on the tiles in after-work hours. Plus, you know anyone who can get away with his little ponytail in state government circles is doing a hell of a job.

Rhode Island will be losing a true unsung hero when he retires next month. Catch you on Narragansett Avenue, Tony. Salud!
