Responding to concerns about gentrification on Providence’s West Side, the Olneyville Neighborhood Association is slated to stage a public kickoff event this Saturday, June 24, for its Campaign Against Displacement.

Scheduled activities include a 2:30 pm Q&A with city and state elected officials; a 3:30-5 pm workshop on tax increment financing (TIF); and a 5 pm barbecue, with music and an original play produced by neighborhood children. The event will take place at Lemus Auto Sales and Service, 190 Valley St., in Olneyville.

The ONA is among the individuals and groups that are critical of growing West Side development, describing it as a threat to longtime residents and small businesses (see “Class warfare in Olneyville,” News, May 24). The group cites its mission as creating “a diverse, grassroots-led, democratic and non-partisan political movement that wins economic, social, and political justice.” (For info, call Norman at 401.556.9211, or Michael at 401.556.2228.)

In related news, J Hogue and Michael Lozano have announced plans to redevelop downtown Pawtucket’s 1906-era former W.T. Grant department store as the Grant, a mixed-use business incubator for design- and arts-related businesses. For info, visit thegrant.highchairdesign.com.
