Manzelli takes perverse joy watching the voodoo-doll-like sufferings of his homemade Brian Harer shrinky-dinks — “put ’em in the oven big, and they shrink and go weereeweereee and they all contort and look like they’re writhing in extreme pain: arrrrrggggghh!!!” Still, he’s hardly a menace to society. He’s a peacenik, and a reporter.
“I’m committed to the story,” says Manzelli. “Whether you want to call me a reporter, or a fucking idiot who thinks he’s a reporter, I was committed to covering what happened that day. And when this MBTA officer pulled this crap, that became the story. There was nothing, and then he made something out of nothing.”
Whether his conviction is upheld, or overturned, or there’s a retrial, Freeman Z says he will keep recording. “This goes back to what a reporter is. Nowadays, the definition of what a reporter is, is who has access. ‘I’m in the White House press corps.’ Yeah, because you kiss the president’s ass! You’re supposed to be out there looking for stuff to tell people. Informing people.”
