Who’s with whom

And yet, Richardson has done little or nothing so far to generate support here. A-List fundraisers in the area say they haven’t had any contact or information from the campaign, and can’t name anyone they know in the New Mexico governor’s corner. His Harvard Club fundraiser this week was not expected to draw a huge crowd.

That’s partly because Richardson has been anxious not to spend too much time 3000 miles away from the state he’s just been re-elected to run — hoping to avoid Romney-esque abandonment charges.

Instead, he’s been grabbing the low-hanging fruit offered by his friends and supporters in New Mexico and Washington, DC. Meanwhile, Boston-area bigwigs are getting scooped up, including fellow Tufts alumni Solomont and Barbara Grossman. The question is whether anyone will be left when Richardson finally gets around to wooing them.

And the field
There are, of course, those in the local area who prefer a more off-brand candidate.

Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich had quite a bit of support from Massachusetts liberals last time around — aside from the West Coast and Hawaii, the state was one of his biggest sources of funds for his 2004 campaign. Many will be with him again, although the state organization has yet to take shape.

Former Alaska senator Mike Gravel also figures to get some local progressive support. He was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, and has been endorsed by New England icon Granny D.

There are also some waiting for Wes Clark to join the race. But the real Godot, of course, is Al Gore.

Until Gore definitively rules out the possibility of running, a lot of Massachusetts Democrats will withhold their full-fledged support for anyone else. After all, one uncommitted big-bucks Democrat says flatly that he would support Gore if he ran.

well, it's an old trait. back in the day these folks would crack out a check to hang out at bob farmers brookline chateau. there they'd grip and grin for an hour and get a photo. now they get nothin'. those that rode that mechanisim to d.c. a la the clinton wander the boulevards and k street aimlessly. whatever happened to just going to graduate school?
