Maine pop star bids to get FedExed

Howie daze
By CHRISTOPHER GRAY  |  April 11, 2007

Back in the late ’90s, Bangor native Howie Day was a hard-working, constantly touring local singer-songwriter armed with little more than a guitar and a four-track, which he used to turn his bummed-out maladies into atmospheric and occasionally compelling pop ballads. He made an escape from the coffeehouse/college cafeteria circuit, when Sony signed him to their label and turned his debut album, Australia, into an innocuous radio-rock hit.

Day’s ascent into John Mayerdom continued until 2005, when his drunken stupors got him arrested a couple of times, most notably for locking a fan in his tour bus bathroom after his sexual advances were denied. Not content to play second fiddle to Maine native/Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey in the taboids, Day has recently made perhaps his shrewdest career move yet: he started dating Britney Spears while they were in rehab together.

The new couple are said to text message constantly. Britney is on record calling Day “the best kisser ever,” and Britney’s mom is said to be dismayed about another post-FedEx fling with a second-tier pop star. Britney’s also got a new wig and is undergoing fat injections to primp herself up for her new beau, in anticipation of their public debut at Britney’s cousin’s wedding in June. In the meantime, Day’s MySpace page is experiencing higher traffic than ever before. More than 13,000 people have viewed the site in the past few days. Here’s a semiliterate taste of what his fans think:

— BRITNEY SPEARS??? WAY TO GO!

— yeah i dated britney once.. you have your work cut out for you man. I drove by your parents place the other day... what happened to their little motel?

— Britney Spears!? Barf! You’re too good for that. I blame it all on your trip to a little duplex in Columbia a few years ago!

— ♥♥ clearly inlove with you ! omg so i heard a rumor that u and britney spears .. congratlations .. just wanted to wish you a happy easter .!! love always&forever

— Hey what’s up my peeps let me tell you something that girls won’t tell you.that size does matter hear is what you can do about this ...

— jesus christ! dude i just managed to win an iPhone ...

— Howie, I wish you the best in your recovery. Insanity is not a good thing as I’m sure you’ve learned by now. Stop the insanity and stay off the Britney train, please.

— jesus christ! dude i just managed to win an iPhone ...

— Please Please PLease Dont Run around with Britney Spears, association with her can only earn negative tabloid rumors and a poor reputation. I hold Howie on such a high pedistool I would hate for that great image to be tainted by the likes of her!!!!

Who was the least idiosyncratic band at Bubba’s last Thursday? Maybe the (not breaking up, but going on academic hiatus) duo Haru Bangs, who were the only act in plainclothes, but who also unfurled dynamic, punishingly loud fits of drum and effects-mauled guitar which will either strike you as utterly alienating or as novel, dizzying bits of well-composed chaos?
