There are two potentially deadly weapons involved in drunk driving: alcohol and automobiles. Yet people need not imbibe any mind-altering substances to drive poorly or to injure and kill people. Yakking on the cell phone, being tired, or being just a really bad driver, amid way too many cars on the road, can also result in tragic consequences.

Jorge has had too many cocktails on a number of occasions, but he has never driven drunk because HE DOESN’T DRIVE. On the other hand, many people who have been stone cold sober have been involved in terrible accidents, because they weren’t paying attention, or (get this) there are too many cars on the road and it’s dangerous just being out there even when everyone is doing their best to drive well!

We should get serious about taking people’s licenses away for long stretches of time, but in order to do this we need a viable mass transit alternative.
