Finally, Darren McGavin was notable for his roles as detective Mike Hammer and in Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Phillipe encountered McGavin on a number of occasions when he moved into his Connecticut neighborhood while P. was a ’ute from the wrong side of some fancy tracks. McGavin caused a big stir by building his waterfront home up a full story above the allowed limit. This transgression, which enraged the local homeowners, was repaid to his family via his young son, York, who was duly pants-ed at the local swimming hole and sent home bottomless, while P. and friends then lost all his fishing plugs after they snagged on some rocks. Hammer that, Mike.
See you in heaven, if we make the list, boys. And thanks for the memories.
We like Ike
We send kudos to columnist Bob Herbert of the New York Times, who recently wrote about the documentary, Why We Fight. The pivotal figure, he explains, is Dwight D. Eisenhower, general and World War II hero-turned-president, who issued a stern warning in 1961 about the burgeoning might of the military-industrial complex — words that have become gruesomely true. His granddaughter attributed another telling line to him: “God help this country when somebody sits at this desk who doesn’t know as much about the military as I do.” Like a draft-dodging AWOL National Guardsman whose Poppy has protected him from all those bad things for 50 years? Mission accomplished!
