When Gaffin announced U-Hub’s launch in January 2005, he waxed optimistic about the potential of citizen journalism — “the idea,” as he put it, “that all of us with our blogs and digital cameras and Flickr accounts and copies of Word 97 could create a new information resource, one that could tell the stories that will never appear in the Globe or Herald — or provide a different perspective than you’d see on Channel 7.”
The funny thing about that statement — aside from the reference to Word 97 — is that U-Hub works because, at this point, it’s not quite what Gaffin originally intended. If 100 different people were blogging there every day, it could be a great read. But it would also dilute Gaffin’s authorial voice and disrupt his pitch-perfect blend of links, critiques, and snark. Gaffin’s designated nemeses might welcome such a development. But the rest of us should be pleased things worked out the way they did.

The bay of Ephesus laps Collins Avenue in Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's Latin-tinged, frisky if over-frenetic The Comedy of Errors (at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common through August 16).
