“I believe it’s a mistake to think about this in narrow terms, by looking only at advertising revenue and job cutbacks and the rest of it,” Burgard says. “The smartest people in this area have been thinking in broader terms about the role of journalism in society, the way in which journalism contributes to an informed citizenry on a long-term basis. . . . And when you think about it in those terms, a well-educated, smart, intellectual, ethical core of people who are devoted to journalism is as important as it’s ever been, and will continue to be so in the future.” That’s a compelling call to arms — especially since, for the time being, the jobs are actually out there.
